Spider Rock Canyon de Chelly

Some people refer to Canyon de Chelly is a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. Spider Rock is the highlight when visiting Canyon de Chelly.

Three Canyons

It’s one of three canyons in northeastern Arizona: de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument. Canyon de Chelly and Spider rock formation are located within the Navajo Nation boundaries. The canyon’s features were shaped and carved out by streams and wind. The most renowned of which is Spider Rock photographed here. Spider Rock Canyon de Chelly is an impressive 800-foot sandstone tower. The tower is similar to Totem Pole Rock in Monument Valley. You can learn more about the erosion that create the rock at the Arizona Highways website.

In this photo taken late in the day features the long shadows the spider-like spire. The 700-foot Spider Rock is beautifully lit up in the warm late afternoon glow of the sun. The name, Spider Rock, is derived from Navajo lore regarding Spider-Woman.
