Young clean cut man smiling portrait in a white dress shirt with tie
The business stock photograph above is of a handsome young black man wearing a white dress shirt and striped necktie. The image is shot in-studio against a grey background. The business stock image is of a happy young man with a friendly confident smile.
The trick to creating a good stock image of a man with darker skin tones is proper exposure. In the 1950s through to the 1980s, all studio photos were taken with film. Kodak’s standard film processing often underexposed prints that featured dark skin tones. Which became known as the ‘Shirleys.’ Shirley was the name of the original model with light skin that Kodak used for processing.
The ‘Shirley’ effect is less of an issue know with digital color sensors that don’t destroy darker skin tones. Lighter skin tones reflect light; therefore, when photographing darker skin tones, you must choose your lighting carefully and select an appropriate background, which we have done in this photograph with the grey background that reflects less light and enables an even exposure that enhances the male model’s features.
