Old tree grows out of a rock face against all odds

Partial views of a tree in rock are found in the Haliburton Highlands, Canada.

The tree stump sits on the edge of a river growing through the stones. No soil is visible in the picture. I toned the tree trunk in the black and white photo to emphasize the tree.

Just about 30 minutes away from my northern studio. The tree is on the side of a river in Algonquin Park, the largest provincial park in Ontario, Canada. Although the tree has long since died, hikers to the park have frequently carved in their initials and other graffiti. I find this level of detail and texture in the tree trunk makes this a great black and white fine-art image. I have had this image hanging in my studio for a very long time, and I have yet to tire of viewing it.
