Hore Abbey 7

13th-century Irish abandoned ruin Cistercian Hore Abbey

As my wife and I were driving around Ireland’s countryside, we discovered this fantastic abandoned ruin off to the distance from the Rock of Cashel that we were visiting. The Hore Abbey is located about a 15-minute walk from the Rock of Cashel. I had my drone up on this cloudy day and was able to fly over the valley and take a sneak peek at this 13th-century ruin. Old ruins and abandoned buildings are some of my favorite Urban Photography subjects.

The Hore Abbey castle was initially founded by the Benedictine order in 1266. It is said that the Benedictine monks were expelled from the Abby after Archbishop David McCarvill had a dream that they were about to kill him. The Hore Abbey was built in the 13th-century, but many changes were made in the 15th-century, like the tower’s addition in the center. The design is considered a classic conservative design of the Cistercians.
