Homeless Man Reading Bible New York City

One of my primary passions is shooting urban landscapes and street photography. I usually try to avoid photographing homeless people, but the homeless man moved me in this case.

The homeless man is reading a bible under one of the many New York City bridges. I caught his attention and talked to him for a bit. Sadly, he seemed disoriented, which is not surprising given his health. I was disturbed when I looked at his feet.

I walked the streets during my three-day trip to New York City to photograph the Ellis Island Abandoned hospital with Joe McNally. I walked over 85 km over the three days. I shot and talked to many people, bought a couple of homeless gentlemen dinners, and generally immersed myself in the New York streets. What struck me the most was the sheer number of homeless people struggling to find shelter and feed themselves.

The number of homeless in New York is staggering. According to one website, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression. As of November 2019, the Coalition for the Homeless estimates 63,092 homeless people, including 14,973 homeless families with 22,258 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system.
