The abundant hospital at Ellis island is a large multi-structure complete with hundreds of rooms and hallways. This photo is taken dead center to that of the long hall, which creates a parallax effect. A parallax effect is when the position of the image appears to change depending on the angle of view along alternate lines of site.
The long hallway has outdoor windows on each side to increase insulation during the harsh winter winds off the Atlantic Ocean. One of the peculiar aspects of the architectural design of the old abandoned hospital at Ellis Island is that they used windows typical of exterior walls in the main hallway corridors. Most of the windows are original from the early 1900s.
