Ellis Island hospital interior rooms view
The abandoned Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital in this photograph features a view of the Statue of Liberty through the room window. It was the United States’ first public health hospital, opened in 1902, and operating as a hospital until 1930. The facility was closed in 1957.
During the early part of the century, thousands of immigrants would arrive at Ellis Island with hopes of the great American dream, were in fact, quite ill. The hospital facility had 8 medical and multiple isolation wards, and doctor’s offices.
