After the collapse of the Soviet Union block, farmers had little use for workhorses due to the collapse of the kolkhoz system settled in the Romanian Danube delta. With the widespread population growth of wild horses int the Romanian Danube region, the government resorts to shooting the horses to control the population growth and limiting the damage to local flora and fauna. Organizations to save the last remaining wild horses by introducing birth control programs.
