9/11 Makeshift memorial New York City

The tragic events and heroic sacrifices endured in New York on September 11th are etched in our minds forever.  Before constructing the Freedom Tower, I was visiting ground zero and was moved by the 9/11 makeshift memorial to New York City firefighters that died on that day.

343 heroic men and women of the New York City Fire Department (including a chaplain and two paramedics) sacrificed their lives to save desperate souls trapped in the burning towers.  The plaque next to the photographs reads:

343 | This city’s bravest in memory of those who fell and to those who carron on across all cities and towns across all generations.  To our fallen friend & partner volunteer firefighter Glenn I Winuk, Holland & Knight LLP, The Holland & Night Charitable Foundation, The Fire Department of New York | 343

Under the memorial lies numerous pictures, flowers, and notes from loved ones. Multiple American flags are also scattered around the plaque, a show of patriotism and unity from residents of New York City.
